Evaluation Question 2 Contents Page

The heading of my magazine is "SIO this week", I have chosen this to be my heading instead of contents is it makes it more informal which is appropriate to the age range and also is something different than the usual heading contents. The heading is also the same colour as the front cover, this keeps on the continuing house style. I have also put in the top right of the Mise-en-scene an image of the front cover. The reason I have done this is to correlate with the front cover.

Down the left hand side of the page I have included a list of all the features that will be included in the magazine. This is a main convention that should be included on a contents page so that the readers know what page features are on their favourite artists. I have also put artists names in red, the reason i have done this is to highlight the band itself, it also links into the colours i have used for the house style.

The pictures that i have included in the magazine are one bigger image and two smaller photos. I have positioned these in a blocked view to make the magazine look professional. The bigger image is about the main feature in the magazine and has the cover stars in it, the reason I have made this image bigger is because it's what the magazine is focused on in this issue. The two smaller images are based on features in the magazine, one of them from the pug on my front cover, the reason I have done this is because it links the front cover and highlights the feature, also because the feature is revolved around audience participation, it shows that the magazine really does care about its viewers and their opinion. The other picture is a live image and the feature that it's mentioned in is a live review, the reason I have made this feature more important is that because the genre of my magazine revolves around bands performing and playing shows, means that having reviews of bands is important thing for my magazine to have. For all three of my pictures, I have included the page numbers and a caption. The reason i have done this is to give a preview of what will be in the magazine and where about in the magazine it will be.

At the bottom of my page I have included an editor’s letter. The reason i have included an editor’s letter is to introduce the reader to the magazine, also it allows the reader to become introduced to the magazine in a friendly way to what the main features are, therefore giving the magazine a more personal introduction. The name of the editor is written in a more hand-writing style font, the reason I have done this is it makes it more personal. Also at the bottom of the page I have included the page number. This is an important convention because it's what the audience expect to see to direct them.

Evaluation question 2 Front Cover

My magazine is aimed at both men and women. The reason I have done this is it will increase the target audience being aimed at both genres and it means there is something for everything. My cover stars are women but that doesn't mean that it's aimed at just women and could be aimed at men if they like the artist. My age range of my magazine is 16-25 because that age range will be the most interested in finding out about new music and keeping up to date with their favourite bands. The cover star's fall into this age range, therefore the target audience will be able to interact with the artists more and relate to what they are saying. The genre for this magazine is mainly alternative/ indie, however it also spans across of other genres such as rock. I have done this so that it relates to a range of people that like to listen to different kinds of the genre.

The house style of my magazine is white, red and black. The reason I have chosen these colours because they are bold and stand out on the page, also the connotations of red are loud and stand out, which correlates the genre of guitar based/ rock music. In the bottom right I have a list of artists that will also be featured in the magazine as well as the cover star. I have done this to give the reader options if they don't like the cover stars. My main cover feature is the biggest feature on the page and is made bolder with a black outline. This reason I have done to highlight that the star is a big deal and that it's an important story.

I have included a pug in my work which highlights a feature in the magazine. In this case it's about what readers think there perfect gig would be. I have put this in a circle because as well as it being a feature; it also promotes audience participation within the magazine because it's highlighting that the audience opinion does count within the magazine.

The masthead of my magazine is the biggest font on the page. The font itself is bold, this is so it stands out and it’s the first thing that people read on the page. My masthead is abreacted so that people remember it better and so that the name is short and snappy. The name of my magazine is "set it off", the representations of this name is to just go for it and to go crazy, which then correlates with the iconography of the music being loud music. Also the way i have written it is i have put 'set it' in black and 'off' in red, the reason that i have done this is to emphasise the off, making it seem more dominating.
At the bottom of my page i have included a banner with a feature on it. The reason i have included this is to make the feature stand out. I have also put a secondary image to promote the feature. I have done this because it highlights the bands success within what they are doing and also that they have a fan base that they would want you to join. In the bottom of the page I have included the barcode, I have included this because it is an important convention that a magazine need. I have also put the website in on top of the barcode; I have put this in because it creates a world around the magazine that the audience can get involved in.

Evaluation question 1

Evaluation

Question 1: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience of my magazine will be for 16-25 for both women and men. This makes them fall into the socio-economic scale of D and E. The reason that I have chosen to have this as my audience is it's a market that takes the most interest in following bands and their lifestyles, therefore meaning that my magazine would have interest from that kind of target audience. I have also chosen to have this target audience because it uses a lot of social networking. I would therefore be able to make a symbiotic relationship by having Facebook Pages and Twitter pages to spread my target audience and market my product.

The genre of my magazine will be alternative/ indie as well as artists from the rock genre. I have decided to have a wide range of genres because it will increase the target audience and allow the readers to see different kinds of music that they may not have listened to.

I feel that there is a need for my magazine because there is a need for a wide ranged magazine that takes various genres and puts them into one magazine for people who like a broad range of music. Also i think that as well as having a range of music, readers will be able to hear about new bands that are appearing and this is to keep new music coming to peoples ears.

Looking at my mood board, the things that my target audience is mostly looking for is people that will want to go to gigs and festivals. Therefore i have tried to target my audience by having a lot of information on gigs and where bands are playing and to give the latest news on what is happening with festival line-ups. Also my mood board shows that there will be more of a focus on actual bands and a smaller look on solo artists. This is so the audience can connect more with the music and the people that play it rather than it just being about one person. If my magazine had to be compared it would be similar to NME because it reaches a wide range of target audiences because of its wide range of music.

I think that my magazine fits into a niche market which combines new and upcoming music with bigger names and that my magazine reaches a lot of genres. I think that there was a gap in the market for something like this because now i can present a various number of genres in a way that makes all people want to read my magazine because there is something for everyone. Also i will be able to connect to people by including things that people enjoy, whether it's fashion or social networking, there will be something for everyone. This will mean that more people will want to buy my magazine because they will be able to relate to anything.

My primary audience will be people who listen to alternative music and have a different style other than mainstream. My magazine would be aimed at men and women because my features will more focus on the music rather than on gender specific topics. My age range will be 16-25 because there would be more interested in what is happening within their music. I have also aimed it at that age group because looking at new bands and being more individual is a main part of that age range. My secondary audience will be people who may be outside of my main age range, but still into that sort of music. Also if someone has brought the magazine and someone they know (friend, family member) likes something inside that issue then they may want to read then they could just lend them a cop of the magazine. My demographic will be people who are interested in alternative music and having an individual style. These kinds of people would shop in places like Affleck’s palace as well as vintage places and quirky shops.

An example of a product which i similar to mine would be NME. This is a magazine that also spans across a wide range of genres. However it is more focused on a male audience so i would want my magazine to have a male and female target audience.

To make my magazine realiastic to the genre, i have been looking at some of the artists that influence the genre. Some of these include Paramore, You Me At Six, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, The Vaccines, We Are the In Crowd as well as many different artists that act as role models to people. I have looked at people who would inspire people to make music and be in bands. For example, Paramore are a band that write there own music and lryics, and also incourage fans to make music and love there fans. I would not include people such as Justin Beiber, One Direction and Katy Perry because they are not relavent to the genre and are solo artists rather than actual bands. My ideal readers are people who want to know about the actual music and people who aspire to be in bands themselves. Also they would be people who are loyal to finding out about new music and new sounds that they like.

Comparison for double page spread

One thing that is similar is that i have one image on one page with the stars on it. I have done this because it allows the reader to see the stars full star, so the reader can see the body language or facial expressions, so the body language is a fighting pose. The connotations of doing this are being ready to take on anything. Another thing that i have done is to have a funny caption next to the picture. I have done to give the reader humour and make the mood lighter. I have included the by-line down the side of the page. This is a important convention because the reader might be interested in who has written the article and what they may have written in the past.

I have used a direct quote from the article and put it in bigger writing like the other double page spread. The reason i have done this is it breaks up the article and also sticks out to the reader what will be in the article. Like the other double page spread, i have used a stand-by to introduce the article to give the reader a preview of what the article will be about.

Comparison of contents page for music magazine

One thing that i have done that is the same as the contents for Kerrang! is i have put everything is a blocked style, i have done this to make my magazine look professional and also easy to read. I have also made the house style correlate with the front cover. I have done this to make it look professional and so there isn't a colour overload. Another thing that i have done is to have the masthead at the top left of the Mise-en-Scene. The reason i have done because it will be the first thing that people will read on the page. Like Kerrang! i have used a main image as well as having two secondary images. I have done this to give the reader a preview of what's in the magazine and i have used page numbers and captions so the reader knows where in magazine that feature is.

Down the left hand side of the Mise-en-Scene i have all the page number and what's in the magazine. This is an important convention because the reader needs to know where the features are in the magazine. Like Kerrang! I have used sub-headings in a different size; i have done this so that the text is broken up so that it's easier to read. I have included an editor’s letter like Kerrang!. I have done this because it makes it seem more personal and invites you into the magazine. I have also included a picture and a different font that resembles handwriting; this is to add to the personal touch to it.

Comparison for music magazine front cover

I will be looking at a copy of NME and looking at the comparisons it has with my magazine front cover. One thing that i have done in my magazine is have the masthead in the top left of the magazine like NME has in a bold font and the biggest writing on the page. The reason that i have done this is because it will be the first thing that the audience will read. I have used an acronym to shortened the name of my magazine like NME. I have done this to make the name short and snappy so that the consumer can remember the name easily. Another similarity is i have used a pug. The reason that i have used this is because it makes the cover feature stick out to the audience. I also have a variety of cover features on my font cover like NME. The reason that i have done this is because it allows the audience to read these features and then decide if they would want to buy it.
The picture that i have used takes the whole of the mise-en-scene and is a medium close up, i have chosen this kind of shot because you are able to see facial expressions and the top half of their body language clearly. The facial expressions on the NME cover is non-smiling, straight faced, as well as the body language being simple and just stood up. I have made my cover stars do the same thing because it links to the iconography of alternative/indie music. To introduce the cover star, i have included a pull quote; the reason that i have done this is to give the reader a basis of what the article is about. I then have the artists name in a different colour and also bigger than the other two pieces of text like the NME cover. I have done this to highlight who the main feature is about.
I have used a banner along the bottom of the page like NME have done at the top. I have done this because it gives an extra cover feature, but it stands out more because it's a black banner on white writing. This is to break up the page in a professional way so it doesn't look messy. I have also used all the codes and conventions, such as the barcode, issue number, price and date. The reason i have put these in is because it's what the audience expects to see.

Contact Sheet

This is my contact sheet. This shows the options that i could choose for a suitable front cover picture. The ones that i have put with red circles are not suitable because they either are not a medium close up or are not posing the right way to be on a front cover. Another reason is because some of the pictures are not portrait and somtimes do not use direct mode of address.

The reason that i have used the one with the green circles is because there backgrouds are simple and it's possible to have text over them so it would be easy to read. Another reason that i chosen these  photos is because there lighting is suitable to be presented on a front cover. They also use a direct form of address to allow it allow the cover star to connect with the reader and grab their attention. The pictures that i think are the best are the 4 big photos on the left. The reason i have chose these photos is becuase they a medium close ups which allows the reader to see from the waist up to see there body language and facial expressions. The one that i am going to use for my front cover is 2nd one from the left on the top row because the facial expression fits the iconography of rock/ alternative with it being a moody expression.

Music Magazine Proposal

Music Magazine Proposal
The main genre for my magazine is rock, but will be sub genre-red into other genres such as alternative, indie and also focusing on new bands as well and big artists. The reason i am having a wide genre is because it will increase the target audience for the magazine. The name of my magazine will be SIO, which stands for Set It Off. The meaning behind this is that music allows you to go crazy and have fun, meaning the magazine wants it to Set It Off and enjoy music.

The target audience of my magazine will be men and women and the main age group will be 16-25. The reason that i have chosen this age group is because it's at that age group where people try and find new music and also be interested in the bands themselves rather than just the music. As my magazine is based at non mainstream music listeners, my target audience will be more focused on the music and keeping up to date with the music rather than gossip. This is important for my music magazine because it will be a music orientated magazine rather than being a hybrid-genre combining gossip and music. The categorization for my target audience will be indie/alternative people meaning that they may not necessary be all about fitting into a crowd and would rather find there own voice. For example people who would read my magazine may want to be in bands themselves and try and get inspiration from the bands in my magazine, or they might just enjoy the kind of music because it might relate and speak to them. Also because of the bands that will be featured in my magazine, my target audience will be focused on going to smaller gigs and standing gigs to see there favorite bands. Also in terms of style, the target audience would normally dress to be individual rather than to be the same, also that it's not dressing. So for example with shoes, you would normally see people with Dr Martens or converse, this is important because it allows me to focus on those kind of things and then advertise them in my magazine.

The production company that i will be using is IPC media. The reason that i will be using this production company is because it's a British company therefore correlating with the magazine being printed in the UK. Another reason i will be choosing this production company is because it is has a large portfolio selling a large range of magazines which cover a wide range of audience and genres.

The features that i will be likely to include are reviews of albums and concerts. The reason that i will have this is because it will be a important convention that the audience expect to see in a music magazine. Another feature that i will have is a 'day in the life of...'. This will be a feature about a musician and will tell the audience about what they do in their lives, such as a day on tour or just daily life. The reason i have chosen to have this feature is because it allows readers to see what their favorite artists get up to. Another feature that i will include is a feedback page. This will let the reader write in about articles, also they can send it pictures of them with certain artists or other things like drawings. This will create audience participation with the reader as every letter that gets printed will also have a comment from someone on the production team. Also as a promotion for this section, there will be a letter of the week and the winner of this will receive a iTunes voucher. There will also be various articles about bands and artists, the biggest articles being about the cover star. The topics could vary for things such as tours, band splits, new albums etc. These articles will allow the reader to keep up to date with the bands. Something else that i could do is have a gig listings page, which will have every band that is touring at that time in alphabetical order and where they are playing and when.

The main way that my magazine will be distributed will be in print form. The reason that i will have it in print form is because it's something that the reader can keep and come back to at their own leisure. My magazine will be a weekly publication, it means that it will be the latest news from the week that they can read about. There will also be a website for the magazine. This will create a symbiotic relationship between the two media platforms to create a world around the magazine. The website will be able to release the latest news to the public when it comes out and then the print version can do a full article in the next issue. Another way i will distribute news will be through social networking such as Facebook and Twitter. The reason i will be using social networking is that looking at my research, most people use these sites so the magazine would be able to get through to people through that.

The cost of my magazine will be £1.75. The reason that it will cost this is because according to my research, most people would likely spend between £1-£2, so i feel that £1.75 would be be a good price for a glossy music publication. My unique selling point for my magazine is that it has a range of music, this is unique because it allows people with slightly different music tastes to connect through one magazine. This is also important because it will increase the target audience by covering a wide range of music.

Photos for music magazine 5

This picture shows the guitarist and singer from a band called Tonight Alive. The genre of this band is rock/alternative so they would be good to use in my music magazine. The camera shot for this picture is a medium shot, so you can see that they are mid gig. The way that they are stood shows that they are engaging as a band. This photo would be good for a concert review.
This would be a good picture for a music magazine becuase it's a clear photo and you can identify the artist clearly. The camera shot for this is a medium close up so you can see the artist from the waist up and see their body language and facial expression. The camera angle is a low angle, the connotations of having a low angle shot is power and dominance to the singer. This could be used for a concert review and a photo gallery for photo of the week.

Photos for music magazine 4

This photo is showing people having a good time at a club/gig. The people in the picture look happy and jumping around, this shows the fun side of going out and listening to music. The features that i could use this picture in is a reveiw and have somone from the photo talking about the gig. Or i could have a feature about what makes gigs fun and a how to have a good time.

This picture shows sound boxs which are for stage use. The camera shot is a medium shot which allows to see all the boxs comfortably and idenify what they are for. This picture would be useful in a music magazine becuase i could use it in a feature about how a gig is produced, or i could use it in a day in the life page about an artist or part of a production team.

Photos for music magazine 3

The band that this guitarist is from is We Are The In Crowd, the genre that this band goes into is rock/ alternative meaning that they would be a good feature for my magazine. This would be a good photo to use in a music magazine because it is a clear picture so you can identify the musician. This is also a good picture because it is a medium shot, meaning you can see the setting as well as the full musician. The way he is facing the side shows that he is potentially looking at his other band members whilst playing, this could mean that hes enjoying himself and is engaged with the bands music enough to look at the other members.
This would be a good gig photo becuase you can see that whole of the stage. As this was at a Paramore show, this would fit into my genre. This is an extreme long shot, so could be used as a feature on larger gig venues, or as a reveiw for the band itself. The use of the lighting is effective becuase it highlights the stage aswell as branching out into the audience, this connotates that the fans are an important part of the gig to aswell as the artist.

Pictures for music magazine 2

This would be a good photo to feature in a music magazine because it shows a singer at a gig, so this would be good for a concert review or an interview with the singer. The camera shot for this picture is a medium shot. This allows you to see the full person aswell as the surrondings of the gig. You can also see hands in the corner, this shows that it is a small gig venue which i could do a feature on upcoming bands and as this band is american, i could also talk about bands trying to break england.

This picture would a good picture to use in a music magazine becuase it shows the bass player mid-gig performing. Another thing that is good about this picture is that is a medium shot so it shows the full person. The way that the bassist has his leg on the moniter conntates confidence and also getting into the gig. It's a clear picture which means that they bassist can be idenified easily.

Pictures for music magazine 1

This would of been a good picture because it is a close up and allows the reader to see the persons facial expression. You can tell by the picture that the singer is mid gig and singing, therefore it would be good for a concert review. Having the hands in the bottom left of the picture adds to the effect of the picture because it shows the singer getting involved with the audience and how it's a smaller gig that the band can get to interact with the fans.

This picture correlates with the picture above, so i could use both of the pictures in a concert review. The camera angle for this picture is a low angle shot, the connotations of having a low angle shot is the singer shows dominance. The shot that is used is a medium close up, which is shows the singer in mid flow of there set and in this case, having the crowd holding him up by his feet, this would be a good thing to mention in a review because it allows the reader to see that the band relies on it's fans to make a gig amazing as well as them putting the effort in.

Research

These are my market research results for my music magazine. From my results i will be able to conclude what readers want from a magazine.

Looking at my results i can see that the two top musicans are Avril Lavigne and Arctic Monkeys, so i will use them in my magazine aswell as other bands surronding the genre i will be focusing on. For my housestyle i will be using Black, White and Greys the majority of people wanted these as the house style. For social networking i will cover a varity of different sites but will focus mainly on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The offers that people want to see on a magazine would be photo gallery's and interveiws and reviews, also the special offers i will put in a magazine are iTunes vouchers and clothing discount as these were the most popular. Most of the people that filled in my magazine said that they would prefer larger gig venues so i could feature gigs that are mostly at larger venues. The kind of adverts the audience would like to see were mainly clothing. When asked how much they would spend on a magazine the majority would spend between 1 and 2 pound and when asked how they would be involved with the magazine they responded with competitions. My final question was what shoes would the target audience most likely to wear and the top answer was converse, this means i could have adverts promoting converse in my music magazine.
