Evaluation Question 3

Question 3: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My cover stars relate to my ideal reader because of their stance and body language. There straight faces and glare-like look shows the rebellious and no nonsense attitude, this attracts the reader by showing a different, less stereotypical vision of females in the music industry. The outcome of having this image is good because it makes people want them to be there role model because they are different. The intertextuailty I have used is something that the reader will understand because it links things within the genre together that the audience can understand. The stars in my magazine have to represent the genre to appeal to the target audience. So for my magazine, the cover stars have to represent a non mainstream, slightly rebellious attitude that the ideal reader can relate to. I have tried to make my stars role models for my readers, they are the same age as my target audience and because my magazine targets both genders, I have made sure they would be good role models for both genders.

I will now be looking at how Hayley Williams, someone who is well known within the genre, changes her appearance depending on the audience.

This would be the main stream representations of her, this photo being from a magazine articular about her. The things that make it look mainstream is her posture. Lifting her skirt up gracefully gives the impression that she is a girly girl, also the fact that the way she is holding herself is very posed, it shows that the way she wants to be perceived in this context is as a girly girl, which as a front women of a band of guys she would like to do sometimes. Another thing that she does is that she is wearing barely wearing any make-up and hair done properly, giving a natural look that would appeal to people because it shows being natural, which girls are told to do alot. Her shoes have a small heel and are small and delicate, the connotations of this are being feminine. However the fact that she is still showing her signature orange hair, this shows that she never would change too drastically for people. You can also see one of her tattoos on her wrist which is the bar symbol, which represents Paramore as a band. The representations of her having this on show would be that even though she does things on her own, she is still in a band and sticks by that. In this photo you can see that Hayley Williams is trying to show herself as a good female role model that people can look up to because she proves that its ok to be in a rock band and be able to dress up and be a girl at the same time.

The way that Hayley Williams shows her niche representation is when shes on stage. One major thing that you notice about how she presents herself on stage is headbanging, this shows her as someone who doesn't mind getting into it on stage and letting go. Also the fact that she headbangs links to the iconography of rock music. Her style is also very important, in the picture on the right for example she is wearing leggings, crop top and a leather jacket. The leather jacket symbolizes being tough and being rebellious, this would appeal to people because it would show that she likes to be different when it comes to being on stage and that being different is a good thing. Her facial expressions are angry and full of fire. The connotations of doing this is that shes ready to fight for what she wants. You can also see that she keeps her signature look, the main example of this is her hair. The bright orange hair is something that is always the same, this showing her own unique style This look is different to a main stream representation because it shows her more rock and rebellious side, also making a stand about having women in bands with guys.

Both of the outfits that Hayley Williams wears represent different things. The main stream representation would be something you see in a magazine, rather than something you would see her wear onstage. Her stage outfits would only be something you would see on stage rather than posing in a magazine with. The dress that she wears connotates innocence and being girl, whereas leather jackets and leather leggings symbolise rebellion.
